Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis - HBO

Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) - Official Trailer

The November 13, 2015 terrorist attack in Paris claimed 130 lives around the city — 89 of them at the Eagles of Death Metal’s Bataclan Theatre concert.

Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) spotlights the American rock band as they recount their experiences before and after the tragic events. The film explores the deep bonds between band co-founders Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme (also a member of Queens of the Stone Age), as well as the intense connection the band has always had with its devoted fans, which moved them to return to Paris to perform once again in February 2016.

Directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Live Nation Productions and Company Name, the documentary is a portrait of resilience in the face of unspeakable horror and a life-affirming coda to the events of November 13.

The documentary profiles the intense relationship between Hughes and Homme, which began in childhood and has always been an inspiration for the band. After detailing the origins of their friendship in Palm Springs, California and the genesis of the band, Hughes, Homme and fellow band members Dave Catching, Matt McJunkins and Julian Dorio provide harrowing first-person details about that day in Paris, when they desperately tried to save their lives, while Homme (who had stayed behind in the States) received shocking reports back home.

Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme’s close friendship, coupled with a profound sense of responsibility to help the Bataclan survivors cope with their physical and emotional wounds, inspired the band to return to Paris, first to perform with U2 at a rescheduled concert three weeks after the attacks, and later, to finish its own Paris show at the Olympia concert hall. It became clear to Hughes and the rest of the band that they must come back to Paris, not just for their own state of mind, but for “Nos Amis” — their fans and fellow Bataclan survivors.

Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) includes accounts of fans who survived the Bataclan attack, extensive behind-the-scenes footage of the band and interviews with Bono and The Edge of U2.

The Anti-Mascot

2015 Emmy Award nomination for “Outstanding Short-Format Nonfiction Program”

Released in May 2015, this ESPN Films 30 for 30 short film follows the San Francisco Giants during the 1984 season as they finished dead last. But neither the players nor the fans had as nightmarish a season as the team's first mascot. Wayne Doba, a classically-trained actor, dancer and mime, found himself sweating inside a foam suit resembling a hamburger with claws. Instead of cheering for the home team, the "Crazy Crab" rooted against the crowd, taunting players and fans. It was a radical experiment intended to distract from the team's lackluster performance. But as the season went south, so did the gimmick. The crab quickly became a punching bag for fans who pelted the mascot with beer bottles and batteries. 30 years later, the "Anti-Mascot" uncovers the forgotten history of a brilliant marketing scheme that spun wildly out of control.

The Queen of Code

Released in February 2015, this ESPN Films and Five Thirty Eight short documentary revisits the early days of computing when software development was helmed by the great Grace Hopper. She was a woman who dedicated her life to bring computers to the masses when most of her colleagues supposed the technology would only be useful for scientists and the military. Through her genius, she taught software in a way that everyone could understand and communicate with computers. This explores Grace’s quirky brilliance, and shines a light on the underrepresented history of women in computer science.

In Deep Water

Released in April 2015, this ESPN Films and Five Thirty Eight short documentary tells the story of the SS Central America, which sank in 1857 off the Carolina Coast in a Category 2 hurricane, carrying thirty thousand pounds of gold. Over a century later and after many failed attempts to locate "The Ship of Gold", a team of explorers led by Tommy Thompson in 1984 implemented Bayesian Search Theory and located the wreck. Little did they know, finding the gold would prove to be the easy part.
